The Benefits of After-School Swim Programs for Student Wellness

By Kate Cohen

It’s a hard time to be a teenager (or a tween, for that matter).

Studies show that school-related stress affects nearly 75% of teen students. This can lead to increased anxiety, poor sleep quality, and depression.

Paired with overexposure to social media, social isolation, and a lack of mental health support, young people are struggling more than ever to prioritize their own wellness.

After-school hours are the ideal window for young people to participate in extracurricular activities that can help them establish and maintain healthy habits.

Take, for example, swimming.

This aquatic sport is effective, enjoyable, and accessible, making it a great option for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

At Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center (RAFC), we host a variety of after-school clubs and programs that offer young people a safe space to gather, grow, and move.

Here’s a look at how after-school swimming helps students build healthy habits.

Key Takeaways

Why After‑School Hours Matter

Several swimmers dive into the water during a relay at RAFC.

Chances are your child spends most of the school day sitting at a desk. They may even be staring at a computer screen.

After-school hours offer valuable opportunities to participate in activities that physically and mentally stimulate growing kids.

Structured activities help students avoid sedentary patterns, keeping them active while still maintaining routine and consistency. Engaging in something they find fun and interesting can help them decompress after a day of academic stress.

Studies show that kids who participate in after-school programs and activities are also stronger learners, many of whom go on to pursue higher education and ultimately earn higher incomes.

The Physical and Emotional Benefits of Swimming

Swimming is a great after-school option for students for a variety of physical and emotional reasons.

Aquatic fitness offers full-body exercise without joint strain. It improves cardiovascular health and endurance while building strength through natural resistance.

It’s also a great stress reliever and mood booster, which can ultimately benefit in better sleep (which is critical to learning and development).

In addition to the physical benefits of swimming, there are plenty of ways aquatic exercise can support mental and emotional wellness, too.

The rhythmic breathing and sensory calm associated with swimming is a great mindfulness practice, forcing the brain to be present in the moment.

Of course, the time spent away from screens while in the water is also highly beneficial to swimmers of all ages, but particularly young people.

Healthy Life Skills Formed Through Swimming

Swimming is a wonderful way to build healthy life skills, particularly when participating on a team. It teaches young people self-discipline and personal responsibility. With a team counting on you, you need to bring your best self to the pool every day and come prepared to work.

Of course, being on a team also provides social connection and fosters teamwork, both of which are critical to kids’ and teens’ development.

While participating on competitive teams, students also learn how to handle wins and losses with resilience and humility, ultimately creating emotionally strong individuals who persevere when working towards a goal.

As swimmers grow and learn, they also build confidence and self-esteem, becoming stronger leaders, teammates, and friends.

Aquatic Club Programs at RAFC

RAFC hosts a variety of after-school aquatic club programs dedicated to helping young people thrive in the Orlando community.

Lakers Swimming offers instruction for swimmers of all levels, fostering a “lifelong love for the sport of swimming.”

The competitive branch of the program is Lakers Swim, which supports student athletes through dedicated coaching, accountability, and consistent training.

Another aquatic club that meets at RAFC is Orlando Dive Academy (ODA), an organization dedicated to the sport of diving. They offer novice, intermediate, Junior Olympic, and high school programs for young people.

ODA has both competitive and non-competitive programs, so you can find the right fit for your student.

Team Orlando Water Polo is another great extracurricular program for young people that hosts practices and tournaments at RAFC.

This exciting program has memberships for kids as young as 12 through high school, offering plenty of opportunities to learn about the awesome sport of water polo.

These three organizations offer opportunities for young people to learn and grow while making choices that are healthy for the mind and body.
