New Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center Opens Today on International Drive

ORLANDO (April 5, 2021) — If you ask Harris Rosen how things are going at the new Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center (RAFC) in Orlando, most likely he’ll respond “quite swimmingly.”

The new Rosen-owned and operated facility, gifted to Rosen last October from the YMCA of Central Florida, opened today, Monday, April 5, to the general public, after having been closed for renovations since last fall. As a warm up, the newly enhanced facility has been hosting prestigious swim meets throughout March 2021.

A New Era in Orlando Fitness and Aquatics

Rosen was gifted the former Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center — now the RAFC — from the YMCA of Central Florida, preserving it from closure for the community, charities and local to international competitive aquatic teams and individuals who had come to rely on the 35-year-old facility on International Drive. While the transition occurred this past October, the purchase was 28 years in the making.

Rosen, a prominent Orlando hotelier and avid swimmer, turned activist for the facility in 1992 when the private center, then called the Justus Aquatic Center, was shut down by the mortgage holder.

“I remember arriving at the center one day and finding some Special Olympians hovering about,” said Rosen. “One of the youngsters recognized me as a swimmer there. They asked me if they’d done something wrong, to have it closed. It broke my heart. I knew I had to do something.”

Respecting its place within the fabric of the Orlando community, and especially the swimming community, Rosen called upon celebrities, organizations, and even Orange County to help save the competitive swimming center.

Under his visionary leadership, the facility was ultimately gifted to the YMCA of Central Florida and revenue-generating programs were put in place to help offset operating costs. Rosen also helped by donating millions to the YMCA through the years. In 2018, to honor his extreme dedication, the facility was renamed the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center.

“Did I ever envision owning a facility like this? Not in my wildest dreams,” said Rosen, who as the Southeast’s largest independent hotelier, has owned and operated Rosen Hotels & Resorts for close to 47 years.

“These are not necessarily the times when one would take on such a project. However, I came to realize that perhaps these are just the times when we need to preserve any normalcy that we can and any opportunity to maintain our health,” said Rosen. “Hearing from so many in the community who would be devastated by its closing, I felt compelled to help keep the doors open and appreciate the partnership of the YMCA of Central Florida in allowing me to do this through their generous gift.”

Rosen Brand Standards

In recent months, the RAFC has undergone a deep cleaning, multiple renovations and a general sprucing up, elevating it to Rosen standards to open to the public. Vacationers and meetings attendees who have stayed at one of the eight Rosen convention and leisure properties in Orlando know what to expect — unrivaled customer service, well-maintained, innovative facilities and a laser-like focus on guest and associate well-being. RAFC members and aquatics competitors also will become familiar with and benefit from the Rosen standards. As the facility opens to the public, it also features heightened safety and wellness protocols in response to the recent pandemic, implemented as part of Rosen’s Total Commitment™.

While enhancements ensue, defining world-class elements remain. One of the largest competitive swimming facilities in the Southeast, the RAFC boasts one of only seven indoor performance diving rooms in the nation and is known as one of the fastest tanks in the nation. The 10-meter dive tower and 50-meter competition pool are unrivaled in the state. Numerous world and American records have been set over the years at the facility by Pablo Morales, Janet Evans, Matt Biondi, Tom Jager, Dara Torres and others.

There is no shortage of familiar faces welcoming members. Mike Miller, who for the past four years has served as director of aquatics, events, programs, and finally, operations at the former facility, is the executive director of the new RAFC. Previously, Mike was the aquatic and operations director at SPIRE, a renowned Olympic and Paralympic training facility in Geneva, Ohio, among other sports-industry positions.

In the true spirit of The Harris Rosen Foundation, which owns and operates the facility as a 501 (c) (3), the RAFC is dedicated to elevating the quality of life of its members and visitors both locally and from throughout the world.

“Ultimately, our goal is to be an inspiring fitness center to support the community and visitors with their wellness goals, while continuing to be a world-class facility where athletes of all ages and levels from around the world come to enhance their aquatic abilities,” said Rosen.

In March, the RAFC hosted the prestigious National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) National Championships for seniors and age groups. And in 2022, will host the National Special Olympics swimming competitions. The RAFC also will continue to serve as the host training facility for the local Man-O-War Special Olympics swim team.

Cheering on the Special Olympics team from the sidelines is sure to be a familiar face, Harris Rosen. No doubt he will be there to complete part of his fitness regime — a daily 1 1/2 mile swim in the 50 meter pool, and to keenly monitor RAFC services and operations to ensure they uphold Rosen standards.

The Harris Rosen Foundation to Reopen and Operate The Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center

ORLANDO, Fla. – (October 27, 2020)

The Harris Rosen Foundation and the YMCA of Central Florida jointly announced today that the Orange County Commissioners have approved the transfer of the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center, located at 8422 International Drive, Orlando, Florida 32819, from the Y to the nonprofit The Harris Rosen Foundation. The center will now be called the Rosen Aquatic and Fitness Center.

The nonprofit YMCA, which has operated the Aquatic Center for 28 years, recognized that the timing was right to bestow the iconic facility to Harris Rosen’s foundation.

“There is no greater champion of swimming in Central Florida than Harris,” said Dan Wilcox, President and CEO of the YMCA of Central Florida. “Without Harris’ involvement to save the facility in 1992, the Y would not have had the privilege to serve and teach countless swimmers over the years. We are thankful to the donors, volunteers, partners, staff, and swimmers who have helped the Y create life-long memories, friendships, and experiences at the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center. Mostly, we are grateful to Harris, who has yet again stepped up for the community in order to preserve and champion the benefit of swimming for Central Florida.”

Due to the financial impact and growing community needs stemming from the pandemic, the YMCA leaders and board of directors have been actively re-imagining how to best continue to serve the community with reduced resources.

YMCA of Central Florida Metropolitan Board Chair, Pete Krzyzak, added, “We’re looking closely at each location, along with our programs and services, to imagine different ways our neighbors, our community, and our association can remain strong. Many of our Y locations have already reopened with enhanced safety measures. We’ve repurposed other locations to meet specific community needs and we’re exploring new virtual wellness experiences and partnerships. For the Aquatic Center, the Y’s long-standing community partner, Mr. Rosen, and his foundation were a natural fit to entrust the facility. We know it will remain in good hands.”

“The Harris Rosen Foundation is excited to bring back swimmers and jobs to the Rosen Aquatic and Fitness Center,” said Harris Rosen, President & COO, Rosen Hotels & Resorts. “This special place is part of the fabric of our Central Florida community. I’m grateful to the Y for their stewardship for the past nearly three decades and look forward to both honoring and advancing the great sport of swimming for generations to come.”

The Rosen team will finalize details related to the transfer and set a reopening date for programs, events and swim teams to resume with support from the YMCA.

Orlando Marathon Swimmer Sets Guinness World Record for 24-Hour Swim

Rosen Hotels & Resorts Sales Professional Works Swimming into Daily Routine

ORLANDO (October 24, 2019) — Orlando resident and hospitality professional Yuko Matsuzaki earned a Guinness World Record when her 24-hour swim ending on Oct. 6 was recognized as the “Longest Continuous Swim in a Counter-Current Pool.”

Pushing through pain and battling mind over matter as she hallucinated sea lions and sea dragons swirling in the tiny pool with her, Matsuzaki, 57, spent a full day and night swimming the World Open Water Swimming Association’s (WOWSA) Ocean Fest in Redondo Beach, Calif.

For the travel sales professional at Rosen Hotels & Resorts in Orlando, the Guinness record is the realization of a dream she’d had since she was a child in Tokyo, pouring over the massive book.

Throughout the 8 a.m., Oct. 5 to 8:01 a.m., Oct. 6 swim, fellow marathon swimmers and another world record holder stood by to cheer her on, and even indulged her visions so as not to confuse her. Despite nearly crippling pain in her arm after 16 hours, Matsuzaki completed the swim of a lifetime with only five minutes break per hour, as permitted by Guinness rules.

Matsuzaki, the only Japanese swimmer inducted in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, has competed in other marathon swims, including a solo swim of more than 33 hours in Orlando’s Lake Cane in September 2008 to benefit the Central Florida YMCA swim programs.

It also was her lifelong love of swimming that ultimately brought her to her position in Japanese sales for Rosen Hotels & Resorts, as well as sponsorships from the independent hotel chain to help support her marathon swim goals.

Harris Rosen, the company’s president and chief operating officer, had noticed she was a constant presence on his own daily swims at the YMCA swim center on International Drive. They struck up a conversation and, eventually, her fluency in Japanese led to her hospitality career.

Matsuzaki swims four to five miles, six days a week at the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center – renamed last year to honor Rosen’s efforts to save the facility from demolition.

Although she has this new accomplishment and many other marathon swims under her cap, it’s unlikely she will slow down. And with support from other associates in the Rosen family of hotels, she has a strong backing as she continues to push herself in the future.

YMCA Names Aquatic Center After Harris Rosen, Who Saved It More Than 25 Years Ago

ORLANDO (July 26, 2018) – The YMCA Aquatic Center at 8422 International Drive in Orlando has been officially renamed the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center in honor of Harris Rosen, who led the fight against the center’s demise more than 25 years ago.

Rosen has donated millions to the YMCA, some of which will continue to be used for renovations over the next few years.

“Harris Rosen took it upon himself to save this facility, and, at the time, gave the YMCA of Central Florida one of only two competitive swimming centers in Florida. This allowed us to increase our impact in the Central Florida community and it is only fitting to honor him by renaming this facility,” said Dan Wilcox, President and CEO, YMCA of Central Florida.

“I am deeply honored by this recognition,” said Harris Rosen, President & COO, Rosen Hotels & Resorts. “I have been so blessed to be a part of this community and I hope this facility serves as a reminder to all the children and competitors who enter, that with courage, drive and determination, anything is possible.”

Additional capital renovation donors to the new Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center include: OUC, Lochinvar, Duke Energy, Modern Plumbing, Trinity Surfaces, Cree and Rentex.

The newly renamed Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center is a state-of-the-art facility featuring two Olympic-size swimming pools and new diving platforms. It is home for many competitive swimmers, divers and water polo players.

For Rosen, however, one of its biggest impacts to the community rests in the lives of the hundreds of children who have learned drowning prevention and swimming skills there.

“Who knows how many children have avoided water-related tragedies because of the programs here at the Aquatic Center. It truly saves lives, and I will forever champion the cause to keep our children safe in the water,” said Rosen.

The facility was also selected to host the 2018 UANA Pan American Masters Championships, making it the second-ever American site to host the event. The 2,500-athlete competition began July 25, one day after the Rosen dedication ceremony.

The 2018 UANA Pan American Masters Championship will run until Aug. 12 with events like swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo and open-water swimming. Competitors will represent 43 Swimming Federations in North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. It is believed that Orlando’s popularity will make this one of the largest swimming competitions in North America, outside of a World Championship. In a previous announcement, U.S. Masters Swimming CEO Dawson Hughes called the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center one of the “most respected” aquatic centers in the country.

“They have experience hosting large events and the facility, volunteers and community support to showcase this international event,” said Hughes in the announcement.

Rosen built Rosen Hotels & Resorts into the largest independent hotel company in Florida while never losing sight of those philanthropic roots, especially in relation to the community support of the facility. In addition to Rosen Hotels & Resorts being a hotel partner for the Pan American Masters Championship, it is an annual sponsor of the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center. Rosen has donated millions to the YMCA of Central Florida and currently serves on the board of directors for the Aquatic Center. The Harris Rosen Foundation has also contributed tens of millions of dollars to the founding and support of educational and youth-benefiting programs and scholarships throughout the Central Florida area.
