Things to Do to Stay Active with Grandparents

By Abigail Bass

Staying active is essential for maintaining good physical health at any age, but especially in our later years.

And September is Healthy Aging Month – a special opportunity to celebrate the older and wiser loved ones in our lives.

Since 1992, Healthy Aging has inspired people all across the country to live healthier lives by celebrating Healthy Aging Month. Its mission is to promote a positive outlook on aging through special events and education efforts.

Whether you have grandparents or are one yourself, we’re here to help with ways to stay active as a family all month long and beyond.

Check out our tips for getting in some much-needed movement with the ones highest in your family tree.

Key Takeaways

Join a Walking Club

If you’re looking for a free and simple way to get in more movement with your aging grandparents, a walking club is a great place to start.

Walking groups can help everyone in your family make the “step” towards a more active lifestyle – including grandparents.

Orlando is home to a variety of walking groups throughout the city, including the Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club and the West Orange Walkers. Or you can always start your own walking club with your friends and family.

The best part is, joining a walking group typically comes at no cost. All you need is a pair of comfortable sneakers and some water to keep you hydrated.

Play Low-Impact Games

Staying physically fit in the late stages of life doesn’t have to be tedious – or boring, either. Add some fun into you and your family’s mission for movement with games everyone can enjoy.

Outdoor games like cornhole, croquet, and pickleball are wonderful ways to get in gentle movement as well as some vitamin D. Or bring your grandparents to a game of mini-golf at one of Orlando’s many putt-putt golf courses like Gator Golf Adventure Park or Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf.

Another fun way to incorporate some healthy momentum is with virtual fitness games such as Wii Sports or Nintendo Switch Sports. Invite the whole family for some friendly competition all while staying active too.

Cook a Meal from Farmers Market Food

A tasty, homecooked meal brings everyone in the family together – especially one you make yourself.

Help you and your grandparents stay active by visiting a local farmers market and cooking a delicious dish with your fresh finds.

There are lots of standout farmers markets in The City Beautiful, including the Winter Garden Farmers Market and Winter Park Farmers Market. Browse, walk, and carry some of Florida’s freshest produce to enjoy quality food and family time.

After making your way throughout the market, use your ingredients to make a homemade dish of your choice. It’s a great way to get your grandparents moving around the kitchen, plus you’ll enjoy eating a fresh meal you made together.

Enroll in a Fitness Class

If guided physical activity is what you’re looking for, try enrolling you and your family in a group fitness class.

At Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center (RAFC), we offer a variety of group fitness classes perfect for aging grandparents. Our Senior Fit classes are ideal for active, aging adults with limited mobility to help build balance, strength, and stability.

Choose from Senior Fit – Balance, Senior Fit – Strength, or Senior Strength & Balance classes. Senior Fit – Balance aids with balance and stability, while Senior Fit – Strength helps decrease muscle deterioration through strength training exercises.

Visit our class schedule online and find the best class to help you and your family get moving this Healthy Aging Month.

Swim Together

One of the best ways to stay active during the later stages of adulthood is to get in the water and make a splash.

Swimming is an ideal low-impact activity for aging grandparents. And the benefits range from joint pain and arthritis relief to improved flexibility and cardiovascular health.

Our RAFC teaching pools host a variety of aquatic-based fitness classes to help seniors stay active in the water.

Our Aquacise class offers a light-to-medium intensity workout to help tone muscles and increase endurance. For a higher energy experience, try our Aqua Zumba class complete with South American Zumba and dance steps for an upbeat, yet low-intensity workout.

Looking to make a splash with just you and your family? RAFC members can enjoy our state-of-the-art competition pool for some self-paced swimming while reaping the health benefits of aquatic-based exercise.
